Natives Engaged in Alzheimer’s Research (NEAR) Administrative Core

Status: Current

The Administrative Core provides both day-to-day and long-term direction and support to the Biospecimen Core, Methods Core, Recruitment and Engagement Core, and the three research projects: INTACT, ‘IKE KUPUNA, and CATNAP. The Administrative Core manages, coordinates, and supervises all activities, monitors progress, ensures that plans are implemented, and verifies that pilot studies comply with applicable regulations and policies.

Overview

The primary role of the Executive Committee will be to will make scientific and administrative decisions, monitor and develop the scientific content and direction of NEAR, facilitate collaboration by monitoring progress and outcomes, develop new collaborations, and review strategies for achieving all program goals.

Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Monitor outcomes and progress for Cores and RPs Develop new collaborations

  • Make decisions regarding fiscal and personnel issues
  • Discuss resource decisions
  • Review and monitor IRB/tribal/state/national regulations
  • Review Community Action Board Recommendations
  • Review and determine approvals re: researchers application to access the Institutional Review Board-approved registry
  • Attend NEAR annual conference

Each Core and Research Project is responsible for their scope of work and timeline.

Overview

The External Advisory Committee (EAC) will provide guidance and recommendations on new scientific approaches, recruitment strategies, and collaborations. It will ensure that NEAR maintains focused on ADRD disparities while promoting innovation.

Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and recommendations re: new scientific approaches
  • Provide guidance and recommendations re: recruitment strategies
  • Provide guidance and recommendations re: collaborations
  • Advise on the impact of efforts on ADRD health disparities
  • Ensure NEAR maintains focus on ADRD disparities while promoting innovation
  • Review annual quantifiable indicators in progress re:
    • Staffing: FTE, training, rank, percentage of AI/ANs and NHPIs involved in research at all levels, expertise in methodological areas, average evaluation scores, and numbers of affiliated staff and consultants.
    • Fiscal: subcontracts executed and closed out, RPs and Cores monitored
    • Productivity: External proposals written and funded, refereed publications, Web of Science citations, invited presentations, and participation in NIH review committees by NEAR scientists
    • Infrastructure: offices occupied; computers, servers, and other equipment in use; trainings conducted; and dissemination activities completed
    • Scientific measures: number of external research applications submitted and successfully funded by NEAR investigators on topics germane to ADRD and MCI; and the total number and citation indexes of NEAR-supported publications in refereed journals.

Overview

The Expert Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias Group will advise us on measurement, impairment, study eligibility, test interpretation, and other topics.
