Body mass index trajectories and cognitive performance in American Indians: Evidence from the Cerebrovascular Disease and its Consequences in American Indians (CDCAI) study
Status: Current
Grant Start: 02/01/2021
Grant End: 08/31/2022
Although American Indian people have the highest prevalence of obesity in the country, they are understudied in research examining the longitudinal variation of body mass index and its potential association with cognitive outcomes. Most nationally-representative datasets do not adequately represent American Indian people, and longitudinal datasets including any American Indian participants are limited. Because of the high prevalence of obesity in American Indian people and the potential associations between body mass index trajectories and cognitive performance, examining these associations is a public health priority. This study addresses this gap with data from the Cerebrovascular Disease and its Consequences in American Indians (CDCAI) study. This is a pilot study within the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities-funded American Indian and Alaska Native Health Disparities Center for Excellence at University of Colorado Denver.
